Hi, I'm Orlagh
I'll be teaching this class. I'm born and reared in Ireland, as we say around here and I grew up hearing stories about St. Brigid and the wonderful work she did. But it was only as an adult, when I began delving into the hagiographies and academic writings around her that I really felt a connection with the saint. Join me as I share her story!
St. Brigid of Ireland
I've written and taught before on the syncretism between paganism and Christianity in Ireland. I've spoken about how much we owe the modern pagan worship of the deity to the teachings around the saint. This is the first time I've taught specifically on the saint though.
And yes, I feel like understanding the saint, her life, the circumstances and society she grew up in, can all help us in our spiritual path with Brigid. It's so easy to skim the surface of this saint, but come with me as we do a deep dive into her hagiographies and the political and social context of her life and times. 5th century Ireland was no easy walk for a woman, particularly a woman who stood out!
A beacon of hope
Learn how Brigid stood as support and a beacon of hope for the Irish throughout the centuries and particularly the women!
Brigid's cross and what it means
There are few images so associated with Brigid as the Brigid's cross - what role does it play in the saint's following and how and why could we use it today?
The role of women in divinity and spirituality
Today, we associate the Christian religion with patriarchy and power imbalance (along with a lot of abuse and scandal!) but what can we learn from the female inequality in Brigid's time and how she dealt with them?
Example Curriculum
Meet your teacher!
Órlagh is an Irish Pagan Catholic, working most of the time with Irish Brigid, but sure the rest of the family drop in as they wish, as well. Órlagh works with energy, whether reiki, reflexology or her own Brigidine practices. She has a strong interest in the Irish language, speaking it, using it, learning more of it and considers it a vital part of an Irish Pagan practice (or indeed any interest in getting to know Ireland in general!) She can be found at www.mybrigidsforge.com or in the Brigid’s Forge facebook group.
