The Course
Liminality is a quality I inherently associate with Brigid. She was born on the threshold of the day, at the threshold of the home, at a time when Ireland was at the threshold of Christianity and paganism. (If we look at the saint, anyway!)
It's inherent to her nature, as she passes over and back between paganism and Christianity, essentially ignoring those boundaries she has no time for.
But as humans, we have a tendency to look at things in binaries. Which can be a bit of a problem for those of us who don't fit in those binaries. In this course, we will be exploring the binaries the world has presented as fact over recent centuries, decades, etc, and exploring how beneficial (or not) changing our perspective to one of sprectra and liminality rather than hard and fast binaries.
We're going to unpack the history, explore cultural examples, and even look at liminal spaces in literature and mythology. (well, within reason...) So get ready to think outside the box and explore the transitions that define the human experience!
Understanding liminality isn't just an academic exercise; it's a way to gain insight into the ebbs and flows of our own lives. By the end of this course, you'll not only be able to identify liminal phases in your life and the world around you, but you'll also have the tools to navigate these periods with grace and confidence. Whether it’s big life changes or the smaller day-to-day transitions, embracing liminality can lead to personal growth and a deeper appreciation for life's journey.
What you will learn
You'll learn how to challenge the binary thinking that has infiltrated our thinking over recent decades.
You'll explore the harm this can do and how it has pushed various populations to extremes to either try to force their world view on the rest of us or just try to survive.
We'll investigate where binary thinking overlaps with oppression and who it benefits, as well as who it definitely doesn't.
And... we'll look at where Brigid stands in all of this. What do her stories tell us? Where does she stand? And what boundaries does she hold dear?
Curriculum
Your instructor
Hi there! My name is Órlagh and I'm your leader for this workshop.
I've been working with Brigid for decades now and has definitely pushed my understanding and learning around the binaries I grew up with and how I needed to learn more and do better.
So, in this workshop, I'll be sharing my learnings with you, and presenting avenues for your to learn more as well! As well as implementing means to challenge your thinking on a regular, if not extremely frequent basis.
